If I go to /System/Volumes/ and then right-click on 'Macintosh HD', I can select 'Encrypt,' which will prompt me to enter a. When I look under Disk Utility now, it says the the disk is just APFS, not encrypted. It can also occur when I wake up my iMac, but it also and annoyingly occurs spontaneously while I am actively working. During the setup process, after logging into iCloud, I unchecked the FileVault option. I am just sitting here doing routine tasks on my iMac and I get these alerts, one after another, with no hardware changes, no software changes and no settings changes. My iMac repeatedly and spontaneously alerts that both of my external (Thunderbolt) LaCie hard drives have not been 'Ejected Properly.' I repeat, this is entirely spontaneous.
